After matchday 11, the Uganda Premier League (UPL) officially takes a short break to accommodate the AFCON that’s set to kickoff in just two days time ahead of the festive season.
The title race is tight! KCCA lead the 16-team table with 26 points after eleven matches, while Vipers, with a game in hand are second with 24 points, closely followed by SC Villa (3rd) with 23 points and Police (4th) with 21 points.
Besides the fight for the league title, there’s another tight race within the league marathon — the battle for the Golden Boot, it is equally tight!
There are over 50 players with more than one goal, and close to twenty are competing closely with each other — 16 of them with three or more goals!
Golden Boot: Kagawa, Kaddu Lead Race
Express’ Muhammad Ssenoga and Kitara’s Patrick Kaddu have been the most outstanding in converting chances to goals — the two are currently joint leading the goalscorers’ chart, both tied on six goals each.
Kagawa scored his six goals against four different teams, including two braces, one against Mbarara City and another against Calvary, plus a goal each against Police and URA.
Kaddu opened this season’s account with a brace against Lugazi, then scored a goal each against Police and URA respectively, before bagging another brace against Maroons, taking his tally to six.
Stiff Competition: The Race To The Top
Just immediately below Kagawa and Kaddu are four other sharp shooters, all with five goals, just one shy off the top.
Edison Agondeze (Buhimba United Saints), Ivan Ahimbisibwe (KCCA), Ambrose Kigozi (UPPC), and Bedia Ikamba are all tied on five goals.
Buhimba United lost their good form, but their forward Agondeze didn’t lose his scoring boots — he has scored against four different teams to rank amongst the leading scorers in the league.
Agondeze’s first goal came against Kitara, before he scored a goal each against Mbarara City and URA respectively, plus a brace against UPDF.
Ahimbisibwe recorded five goals to his name before heading to Morocco for AFCON with the Uganda Cranes. The ‘Hunter’ scored a brace against his immediate former side URA, plus a goal each against SC Villa, Calvary, and Mbarara City.
Kigozi scored a brace against BUL, plus a goal each against Calvary, Mbarara City and Express.
Ikamba scored a brace against Maroons, plus a goal each against Express, SC Villa and BUL.
Still In The Contention…
Samuel Ssekamatte (UPDF) and Arafat Usama are both tied on four goals each.
UPDF marksman Ssekamatte has so far scored four goals.for.the army side, recording a goal each against Mbarara City, URA, Vipers, Buhimba United and BUL.
Vipers’ new signing Usama has so far scored four goals, one each against Maroons, SC Villa, BUL and Lugazi respectively.
Meanwhile, URA pair Fred Amaku and Moses Aliro lead the long list of upto eight players tied on three goals. The other six are; Muhammad Kanyike (Mbarara City), Umar Kasumba (Police), Freedom Mungudit (Lugazi), Najib Yiga (SC Villa), Jerome Kirya (BUL) and Raymond Walugembe (Maroons).
When league action returns in January, we shall see more goals, and the race to the UPL Golden Boot will get even more exciting.
