Uganda Cup Round of 64 Teams Revealed Ahead of Draw

The Stanbic Uganda Cup Round of 64 draw will be conducted this Wednesday, officially ushering in the start of this year’s edition of the prestigious knockout competition.

By press time, two slots from the West Nile and North East regions were yet to be determined. The remaining 62 slots, including non-league side Football Classroom, have already been confirmed.

The competition preliminaries began last month, a phase that determines which teams earn the right to face the big guns. At the Round of 64 stage, the 16 Uganda Premier League clubs and 16 FUFA Big League sides join the fray.

One of the standout stories heading into the draw is Football Classroom, a side that began as an initiative born out of a vibrant WhatsApp group of football enthusiasts. Classroom booked their place at this stage after eliminating Wembley during the Kampala Region qualifiers.

Coached by the renowned Felix Ssekabuuza, Football Classroom sealed qualification with a narrow 1-0 victory at Nakivubo, courtesy of a decisive strike from Johnson Ssenyonga. Along the way, they knocked out Kayda Sports Club, Red Ants and Hearts Lukuuli to extend their fairytale run this season.

The side reached the Round of 64 last season as well but were eliminated by FUFA Big League outfit Buhimba United Saints. This time, they will be hoping to go a step further and mount a deeper run in the competition.

Also set to feature in the draw are two fifth-division sides, Paliisa Hospital FC and Melody Star FC of Kampala, further highlighting the inclusive nature of the tournament.

The draw will be held at Serena Hotel on Wednesday.

Defending champions Vipers SC will be aiming to retain the title they won last season after defeating KCCA FC 2-0 in the final played in May at the FUFA Kadiba Stadium. Livingston Mulondo and Yunus Sentamu scored the goals that secured the Venoms their latest Stanbic Uganda Cup crown.

Round of 64 matches are scheduled to be played between January 24 and 26. As per tradition, Uganda Premier League and FUFA Big League clubs will be on the road at this stage. All ties will be decided on a one-leg basis, with matches going straight to penalties in the event of a draw at full time.
