    Polly Ouma: Uganda Cranes Legend Dies Aged 83

    Uganda Cranes legend Polly Ouma has on Tuesday passed on at Nsambya Hospital, aged 83.

    Ouma was part of the historical Uganda Cranes team that reached the final of the 1978 Africa Cup of Nations, before losing to hosts Ghana 2-0 in the final in Kumasi.

    He featured prominently for the defunct Simba and also captained Uganda Cranes between 1972 to 1974.

    He featured at three Africa Cup of Nations in 1968. 1976 and 1978, and later coached the Cranes from 1989 to 1995.

    Ouma born in January 21 1942, started out at Nsambya FC before moving to Coffee FC and later Simba which he captained to CAF Champions League final in 1972.

    During the 1978 AFCON, Ouma picked a knock in Uganda’s opening game against Congo Brazzaville which ruled him out for the rest of the tournament.

    He was the oldest player in the squad that also had the likes of Paul Ssali, Abey Nasur, Ashe Mukasa, Jimmy Muguwa, Tom Lwanga, Jimmy Kirunda, Philip Omondi among others.

    In his coaching career, he had stints at SC Villa, KCC, Bell, Nile and Express.

    He also coached the Uganda Cranes to three Cecafa titles and was FUFA vice chairman between 1998 to 2004.
