The government of Uganda through National Council of Sports has confirmed that athletes who will prevail at the 2026 Commonwealth Games will be rewarded handsomely.
The games are due to take place in Glasgow, Scotland from July 23rd to August 2nd this year.
While addressing the Bombers team currently in training at Hamz Stadium, Milton Chebet the Assistant General Secretary at NCS, revealed that athletes who will succeed with gold, silver and bronze will be rewarded by the government for their achievements at the games.
“The level of preparation speaks volumes. As government, we have put everything in place to the needed support to ensure the team competes effectively.” The government will reward the best performing athletes with a token of appreciation with UGX 100 million for gold, UGX 50 million for silver, and UGX 30 million for bronze.” He noted
At the 2022 edition that was held in Birmingham, Uganda collected five medals with four coming from Athletics.
Victor Kiplangat became the first ever Ugandan to a win a commonwealth marathon, while Jacob Kiplimo surged to a double gold over the (10,000m and 5000m). Peruth Chemuta managed bronze in the 3000m steeplechase.
The other medal was collected by Uganda’s first ever female Commonwealth games boxer Teddy Nakimuli, who claimed bronze at the previous games.
Uganda will compete in 10 disciplines at the 2026 Commonwealth Games due next month in Glasgow. The delegation will include athletes in athletics, netball, boxing, 3×3 basketball, swimming, weightlifting, para powerlifting, para swimming, judo and track cycling.
Athletics will have the biggest representation with 16 athletes, followed by netball with 12 and boxing with six. Uganda will also field four athletes in 3×3 basketball, four swimmers, three weightlifters, three para powerlifters, two para swimmers, two judokas and one track cyclist.
