Uganda’s Ali Tomusange has been appointed as the Referee Assessor for tonight’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations clash between Egypt and Zimbabwe at the Stade Adrar in Agadir.
A referee assessor is a qualified official tasked with evaluating the performance of the refereeing team in each match of a competition, ensuring decisions and match control meet CAF standards.
Tomusange, a retired international referee, remains one of Uganda’s most recognisable match officials, following an illustrious career that saw him officiate at the 2000 Olympic Games, the 2002 FIFA World Cup, and several Africa Cup of Nations tournaments.
One of the most memorable moments of his career came during the 2002 World Cup in South Korea and Japan, where he served as an assistant referee in the dramatic match between hosts South Korea and Spain.
Tomusange controversially disallowed a Fernando Morientes goal in extra time, ruling that the ball had gone out of play before Joaquín recycled it back into the box. Spain went on to lose the match on penalties.
Tomusange later admitted the decision was a mistake, a moment that became one of the most debated officiating calls of that World Cup.
For tonight’s AFCON qualifier, Issa Sy will take charge as the centre referee, assisted by Nouha Bangoura and Djibril Camara, with Tomusange overseeing the officiating team as referee assessor for the high-profile Egypt versus Zimbabwe encounter.
