The SMACK League, powered by Guinness, returns this Sunday, February 15, with Matchday 8 of Season 8 set for the IUEA Sports Grounds. After a break of more than a month, the Valentine’s Edition promises a packed schedule of alumni football and live entertainment.
Organized by old boys of St. Mary’s College Kisubi, the league resumes with renewed intensity as teams battle for crucial points in the title race.
Five derbies headline the fixtures, beginning with Elite (2008) facing Zuluz (2009), a rivalry that has steadily gained prominence over recent seasons. Gladiators (2016) meet Lycans (2015), while Outkastz (2005) clash with Zimbaz (2006). Pride and bragging rights will be on the line when BlockOwners (2002) take on Window (2001).
One of the day’s most anticipated encounters will see former champions Devils (2004) square off against Window (2003) in a late kick-off expected to draw significant attention.
Defending champions Alks face Vendors in a fixture that could influence the standings as the competition intensifies. Meanwhile, matchday hosts MamaTeo Legends — regarded as the elders of the division — take on Spartans, the league’s youngest side, in a generational showdown.
Beyond the action on the pitch, fans will be treated to a vibrant entertainment lineup. Janzi Band will deliver a live performance blending Afrobeat, fusion, contemporary, and world music. DJ Bugy and DJ Beast will provide music throughout the day, while Lord Amon will serve as master of ceremonies.
Denise Paula Nazzinda, Brand Manager at Uganda Breweries Limited, welcomed the league’s return, noting the significance of the matchday for both players and supporters.
“It’s good to see the league back after the break. Looking at the fixtures, Matchday 8 is set to be full of competitive football and a great experience for everyone involved. And of course, there’ll be plenty of Guinness for everyone and their crew to enjoy while soaking up the atmosphere,” she said.
