Uganda Cranes veteran goalkeeper Denis Masinde Onyango does not see himself making it to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations as a player.
Onyango came out of retirement in August this year during the Uganda Cranes 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
After Uganda Cranes’ disappointing 2025 Afcon campaign, Onyango hinted on the second retirement as quoted by Kawowo Sports
“2027 is very far for me, maybe as a technical member but in terms of playing, I don’t see myself making it to 2027.” Said Onyango as per Kawowo Sports
Uganda exited the continental showpiece at the group stage but Onyango believes it was a good experience for the team ahead of the 2027 tournament that will be co-hosted by Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania
“Very good experience for the boys, after a couple of years without being at the tournament, I think we would have gotten results in the previous games but it was not meant to be. I think we lacked something in this tournament, and I hope we will use it in the next one at home because it’s very important for us to improve.”
The 40-year old goalkeeper featured against Tanzania and also played 45 minutes against Nigeria before being replaced by Salim Jamal Magoola due to injury.
Magoola lasted on the pitch for just 11 minutes following his red card for handling the ball outside the box.
Uganda managed just one point in Group C that was topped by Nigeria (9 points), Tunisia (4 points) and East African neighbours Tanzania (2 points). All the three Uganda Cranes’ group stage opponents made it to the last 16.
