Uganda has officially expressed interest in hosting the African Games in 2031, the National Council of Sports has confirmed.

Organised by the African Union and the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa, the Games bring together thousands of elite athletes from across the continent every four years.

Uganda’s bidding committee is chaired by Milton Chebet, with members Peninah Kabenge, Collin Ssemanda and Dovic Nassuna.

A joint delegation led by Dr Decious Chipande, head of the African Union Council, is already in the country inspecting venues including Namboole Stadium, Hoima City Stadium and Akii-Bua Olympic Stadium, which Uganda has earmarked for the event.

The inspection delegation also has Sid Ahmed Selmi (Chairperson Technical committee for the African games), Penalva Caesar (Technical Committee for African Games responsible for Games Services) and Lina Paul Kessy (African Union sports Council senior sports officer).

Uganda’s budget for the Games is 94m dollars to organise the games under the theme “Uganda, Kyekiseera.”

Previously known as the All-Africa Games, the event was last held in Accra, Ghana in 2023, where Uganda won 20 medals, including four in badminton, cycling, and men’s and women’s rugby sevens.
