The State Minister of Sports Peter Ogwang has released a photo showing the artistic impression of how Mandela National Stadium will look after its ongoing remodeling.
The image on Ogwang’s socials provides a glimpse of the stadium’s exterior design once the upgrade works are completed.
The ongoing works will cater for expanding the seating capacity to approximately 45,000 spectators, roofing the entire stadium, constructing modern VVIP lounges, upgrading the media tribune for the Stadium to meet the required CAF Standards for 2027 Africa Cup of Nations Games.
The project is being conducted by the UPDF Engineering Brigade under the supervision of Afande Peter Kidemuka as part of Uganda’s preparations to co-host AFCON 2027.
State Minister for Sports Peter Ogwang has confirmed that Phase Two of the remodeling of Mandela National Stadium will cost 60 million US dollars, (approximately Shs248billion), to meet the Confederation of African Football (CAF) standards.
Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania is set to host the 2027 edition of the Africa Cup of Nation but the CAF inspection team in February stated that the three nations were not ready to host the mega showpiece at the time.
According to the CAF report, Mandela National Stadium required major upgrading works, indicating that by then it presented major compliance gaps with CAF Category 4 requirements.
